Dr Melissa Hoban

DClinPsy, BSc, Registered Clinical Psychologist (HCPC)

Melissa is an allied psychologist of True North Psychology. She is a clinical psychologist who works both in the NHS and in private practice. She completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at UCL, and has worked across a range of NHS and charitable services for children, young people, adults and older adults. Melissa supports a range of mental health experiences, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues, substance misuse, loss and bereavement. She currently works supporting NHS staff well-being during the pandemic, and can help with work related stress and burnout. Melissa specialises in working with people impacted by trauma, including the experience of PTSD. She takes a trauma informed approach to mental health care, thinking about how we- may have learnt to survive the difficult experiences we’ve had in life, and whether those survival strategies are still serving us today.

In therapy, Melissa is a non-judgemental, empathetic psychologist who believes that we all just find ourselves here, doing our best to survive, and all deserve support along the way.

Therapeutic Approach:

Melissa uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and compassion focussed therapy (CFT) to suit the needs of the person she is seeing. She is also trained in trauma focussed therapy and narrative exposure work. She believes in tailoring her approach to what would most help the person she is working with, depending on what they’d like from therapy.
